The Lord of the Rings writer and producer Filippa Boyens is currently in development on the next live-action film set in JRR Tolkienit’s Middle Earth, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.
Fans were thrilled with the chance to see characters from the original The Lord of the Rings return of the trilogy. We already know that there is a role of Ian MckellanThere’s Gandalf in the film, but now Boyens has revealed that they want him too Viggo Mortensen to return to playing Aragorn.
During a recent interview with The Playlist, he shared that Aragorn has a prominent role in The Hunt for Gollum!
When asked if he would return, she said: “Honestly, it will be entirely up to Viggo, collaboratively and we are at a very early stage. I spoke to Viggo, Andy [Serkis] spoke to him, Peter [Jackson] he talked to him, we all talked to each other, and honestly, I can’t imagine anyone else playing Aragorn, but it will be completely and entirely up to Viggo.
Well, I hope he comes back! It would be great to see Mortensen back in the role of Aragorn after all these years! It’s nice to know that right now they’re all communicating with each other and trying to make it work.
He continued, “I know Andy wants to work with him, but we don’t look at it as using AI [technology]it’s a digital trick and whether or not Viggo will do it will depend entirely on how good the script is.
“And he doesn’t have a script yet. So to be fair to Viggo, let’s see if we write a good enough role and he can find enough of it to know that it’s a performance he wants to do. After that, it will be a matter between Viggo and Andy to decide how to achieve this.”
If Mortensen decides not to return, Boyens said, “We would still want him to be heavily involved, like how can we deliver this character. But literally that decision is many, many months away.
“You have to read the script first and that’s exactly what I’ll be working on when I finish this interview [laughs].”
Mortensen previously shared that he is open to returning to the role, and he discussed it and said, “I haven’t read a script, so I don’t know. The script is the most important thing to me, unless I’m broke , I have no money and I’m lucky to get a job, so it depends.”
The actor also said, “I love playing that character. I learned a lot from playing the character. I liked it a lot. I would only do it if I was right in terms of the age I am now and so on. I would only do it if I was right for the character. It would be foolish to do otherwise.”
Boyens shared some details about the story and promised The Hunt for Gollum it would be a compelling tale, saying:
“It’s a pretty intense story, taking place after Bilbo’s birthday party and before the Mines of Moria. It’s a specific part of an incredible untold story, told through the perspective of this incredible creature.”
Peter Jackson is producing the film together with its partners Fran Walsh AND Filippa Boyens with whom he will write the screenplay Phoebe Gittins AND Arty Papageorgiou.
