Steven Moffat confirms that nothing is happening with SHERLOCK but sees them returning

A couple of months ago, Sherlock series manufacturer Sue Vertue caused a stir when he said in an interview that there is a future for the series.

Fans of the show wondered if it was a preview of something that was brewing, but the show’s creator, Steven Moffatstepped in to clarify that there’s nothing in the works at the moment, but offered some encouraging words about the show’s future.

The show’s writers and creators have always made it clear that the biggest obstacle to another season of the series was the busy schedules of its stars, Benedict Cumberbatch AND Martin Freemann.

Both actors have had very busy careers over the past seven years, starting with the show’s final episode, but many of their obligations to franchises like Marvel and The Hobbitrespectively, they became extinct.

So SFX magazine asked Moffat about the future of Sherlock while promoting his upcoming arrival Doctor Who Christmas Special “Joy to the World,” which he wrote, and said:

“I’d love to do it again. Look, it’s not a format that goes away. It’s over a hundred years old and going strong, so why don’t we do more of it?

“Sue just said it because she was asked and suddenly it becomes a movie announcement! There’s nothing new here. We’re just pushing back on that question, as always.”

He continued:

“We would love to do it again and I hope that one day we will. It seems perverse not to. You do enough shows in your life that no one cares about, so it’s nice to have one that people are passionate about. It’s almost presumptuous, almost arrogant, not to do it again. But there are no concrete plans, absolutely none.”

He does, however, have an idea for what the show would be like in future episodes:

“It would be nice to see them a little older, because in our version the fact that they were younger was always at the forefront, not to mention the fact that they were updated.

“It would be very nice to see them more at the age of Jeremy Brett and Edward Hardwicke, a little more Rathbone and Bruce. I think it would be nice. Now we can see the more famous middle-aged version.”

I’ll take it! The fans want it, the creator is ready, so let’s get Cumberbatch and Freeman on board. Sherlock is one of my all-time favorite shows, and while I love going back and revisiting old episodes, I’m ready for some new Sherlock Holmes adventures.
