James Gunn Explains DCU Projects Will Have a Variety of Tones, Calls SUPERMAN ‘Serious’ and ‘Family Friendly’

One thing James Gunn he clarified his Superman film is that the film will not try to emulate the dark and edgy tone of Zack Snyder’S Man of Steel. His film will be very different in many ways.

The director recently talked about the variety of tones his DCU films will have, and in the meantime, he revealed that his Superman will be “serious” and “family friendly.”

For the most part, Superman has always been a family-friendly character as he has been seen as a true symbol of hope, and that’s what Gunn hopes to bring back to the legendary superhero.

In an interview with MovieZine, Gunn talked about how there won’t be a set tone for the different films and TV shows that will populate the universe. Instead, Gunn is trying to draw inspiration from comic book history to offer a wide variety of stories.

Gunn said: “One of the things I love about DC Comics is that they’ve always been able to tell different stories in different ways. They told more family-oriented stories, more adult-oriented stories, dark stories, light stories.

He went on to explain: “We have something relatively serious Superman and then something relatively comical Peacemaker all in the same universe. Something very adult Peacemaker [and] something quite family friendly like Superman.”

Beyond that, the DCU won’t take the same formulaic approach that the MCU takes, instead wanting each project to have the tone needed to tell a strong story.

He added: “I think being able to tell different types of stories is what makes things fun. One of the things I got tired of is that all these stories are relatively the same. I’m trying to get out of this. We at DC are trying to get out of this.”

I like that Gunn is trying to do something very different with the DCU than what we’ve seen in the past with Marvel and the DCEU. It’s trying to make the DCU unique and stand out from everything that has been done and is being done.

What do you think of what Gunn is doing with his DC film and TV projects?

Superman will be released exclusively in theaters on July 11, 2025.
