Sony Pictures is aiming for a 2027 release of its film HORIZON ZERO DAWN

It looks like Sony Pictures is moving forward with its long-awaited Dawn of Horizon Zero film adaptation – and if all goes to plan, we’ll return to Aloy’s world on the big screen in 2027.

Recent legal documents have revealed that Sony is quietly moving forward with the project. The studio is currently in a legal dispute with Chinese tech giant Tencent over Light of Motiram, which Sony claims is a direct clone of its acclaimed sci-fi role-playing game franchise.

In those same documents, the head of PlayStation Productions Asad Qizilbash gave fans a major update on the film’s development, saying the studio “already [has] a working script e [is] actively looking for a director, with the aim of shooting the film in 2026 and releasing it in 2027.”

Qizilbash also highlighted that the game’s iconic protagonist, Aloy, will be the focus of the film, describing her as “a key icon in the anticipated film” and important “to the driving force of building the franchise.”

Dawn of Horizon Zero was originally in development as a Netflix series before things went off the rails. The project was scrapped in 2024 after the planned co-showrunner Steven Blackmannbest known for The Umbrella Academy, was accused of abuse and misconduct, leading Netflix to quietly abandon the adaptation.

Sony’s commitment to expanding its PlayStation universe to the screen hasn’t slowed down. With The last of us finding huge success on HBO, the studio continues to develop additional live-action adaptations of its biggest titles, including God of war, Ghost of Tsushima (also known as Yotei in Japan) e Helldivers.

If Sony reaches its goal, Horizon will arrive in 2027, but could have strong competition. Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda the film is set for release on May 7, 2027. Fans may remember this Dawn of Horizon Zero originally launched in 2017, only to be completely overshadowed by The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild a few days later. It would be ironic and funny if history repeated itself once again.

For now, though, it’s exciting to know that Aloy’s world of towering machines and post-apocalyptic wonders is officially headed to theaters. Here’s hoping Sony can deliver a cinematic experience worthy of one of gaming’s most visually stunning franchises.
