If there was anyone else inside James Gunnas head of DC, together with his business partner Pietro Safranfans might be worried. The comic book studio has had its lows, punctuated with highs over the years, in a completely opposite manner to Marvel, but things are looking up.
Among Gunn’s Marvel films, the Guardians of the Galaxy film series, to his DC movie The suicide squadand its spin-off show Peacemakerwe’re pretty confident that Gunn will lead us in the right direction.
The director boosted our confidence in a recent interview with Collider, in which he talked about the projects he has on fire, namely several R-rated projects.
When asked if he planned to test the waters to see how an R-rated film would win over audiences, Gunn said confidently:
“We’re not about that. We’re not about ‘See how this goes.’ We have an opportunity to take these characters and really move forward and do what we believe in.
“I firmly believe that if we tell good, authentic stories, whether a movie does well or doesn’t do so well, if you keep the same philosophy, you will build a universe that people will want to love and want to be a part of for a long time.”
Gunn continued, adding that the story was paramount and if the story called for it, then they would make the project regardless of the score, adding:
“It’s not about testing to see if this thing works. It’s just about telling a story. If a story is rated R, we’re totally OK with it. If it’s PG, PG-13, or G, I don’t care: whatever is story-worthy, that’s what we’ll do.”
Gunn added that there is “more than one” thing that is about to be greenlit that could be rated R. The interviewer cited the success of Deadpool and Wolverinewhich Gunn agreed with, stating “it’s true”, before adding:
“People love that character. People love that format for that thing. You know, Peacemaker is unrated, basically. So, we have all kinds of them. I like the idea of doing all sorts of different things.”
It’s clear that by spanning all types of tones, ratings, and even genres, Gunn is ensuring the new DC Universe remains fresh and exciting for audiences of all tastes. The future of DC is pretty exciting.
Superman will be released in theaters on July 11, 2025. Commando of creatures will premiere on Max on December 5, 2024.
