The Goonies is a classic, and many of the film’s young stars have become some of Hollywood’s top actors. Among them there was Josh Brolinwho in addition to being known as Marvel’s creepiest villain, was also nominated for an Academy Award and starred in many acclaimed dramatic roles such as It is no country for old men, Milk, Real grit, Labor Dayand many others.
Brolin is the son of Emmy winner James Brolin, and had a passion for acting in high school, knowing ever since that it was his calling.
So when he landed his first acting role playing the older brother Brand in The Goonies, he was ready to dive into the role. This perhaps led him to take the part a little too seriously, but he also received a little lesson from the film’s producer, Steven Spielbergthat Brolin never forgot.
The actor sat down with People magazine ahead of the release of his memoir, “From Under the Truck,” and recalled that Steven Spielberg broke down his superintellectual approach to the teenage character.
“I think [my character] Brandon is freaking out, and the tunnels represent the inside of his mother’s womb, and he’s trying to cut that umbilical cord,” Brolin recalls suggesting to Spielberg, who promptly dismissed such an interpretation.
“He looked at me and said, ‘Yeah, just act. Just say what’s on the page,’” Brolin said. “He wasn’t an asshole, he was right.”
Brolin went on to call his role in Goonies “probably the greatest experience of my life,” adding, “That was the moment at 16 that should never have happened. I had been kicked out of the house.
“I went to live on my dad’s couch, who was living with someone at the time, like, I need to get myself together. And then I had 350 or more auditions and people said, “You should definitely find a different profession.” You’re not good at this.” And loving that challenge.
The Goonies including the cast Sean Astin, Martha Plimpton, Corey Feldman, Jeff Cohen, Kerri Green AND Ke Huy Quan. The film centers on a group of kids who discover an old treasure map and set out to find the fortunes of a legendary pirate named One-Eyed Willy.
“A family of criminals chases them in hopes of stealing the treasure for themselves. The film, directed by Richard Donner and written by Chris Columbus, was based on a story by Spielberg.
