The world has lost a very talented actor and horror icon with the passing away Tony Todddied Wednesday at his home in Marina Del Rey, California, at the age of 69.
Todd’s representative confirmed the loss, although the cause of death was not revealed. Known for his commanding presence and unforgettable voice, Todd’s career spanned over four decades, leaving an indelible mark on horror and genre cinema.
To many, Tony Todd was best known as the face of Candyman, a role that became synonymous with fear, intensity and raw emotion. His portrayal of the supernatural character in Candyman went beyond horror to touch on themes of race, revenge and identity, making the character an enduring figure in cinematic history. His ability to bring such layered darkness to life allowed this Candyman torment the public for years.
Outside of Candyman, Todd’s film credits have showcased his amazing versatility. In The raven, directed by Alex Proyas, he lent his talents to a film already full of tragic beauty.
Michael Bay’s The Rock saw him in a different kind of high-risk action, while the Final destination the series used his chilling presence as part of the story. Todd was able to embody all kinds of different roles, always bringing his own distinctive power and depth to each one.
Virginia Madsenhis co-star from Candyman, shared a heartfelt message on social media: “My beloved. May you rest in power. The great actor Tony Todd has left us and is now an angel. As he was in life. We’ll talk about it later, but I can’t right now. I love you.”
