The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season three is currently being written, and the showrunners recently offered some insights into one of the show’s most interesting story arcs… Elrond.
During an interview with the YouTube channel Rings and Realms, showrunner Patrick McKay teased the show’s future by saying, “We’re writing season three and there’s a lot going to happen in Numenor.”
When talking about Elrond specifically, showrunner JD Payne explains, “There are a lot of great sprawling moments that Tolkien gives us with Elrond of the First and Second Ages.
“We know that he is the herald of Gil-galad in the Battle of the Last Alliance. We know he has this moment by going to Eregion and fighting this hopeless and unfortunate battle.
“From the first moment, we thought about Elrond going through these huge, life-changing events and experiences.”
McKay went on to talk about their plan to break Elrond and share this information with the actor Roberto Aramayo: “We’re going to break it. We cast him as the most optimistic character on the show, right.
“And I remember talking to him and he was like, ‘Why? I don’t understand, I love Lord of the Rings, but why?’ and it was like if we took him on a journey, we were going to break him because this is the story of Elrond.’
“This is the story of Elrond, he is this incredible force of good who loses everything.” Payne added: “The hits just keep coming, they never stop.”
So, this is a very dark and tragic story for Elrond, and when this series ends, Elrond will be a completely broken Elf. Damn, this shows that it will be a real disadvantage.
