Dorothy’s iconic ruby slippers worn by Judy Garland In The Wizard of Oz they are auctioned by Heritage Auctions for over $800,000. The move comes years after they were sadly stolen from a museum by a mobster.
The slippers were taken by a former mafioso Terry Jon Martin from the Judy Garland Museum in 2005 while he was trying to make “one last score,” the Associated Press previously reported.
Martin thought the slippers contained real rubies because they had previously been insured for a million dollars. He was indicted in the U.S. District Court of Minnesota and charged with theft of important works of art. The slippers were found 13 years later, in 2018, by the FBI, which valued them at $3.5 million.
The auction will last until December 7, with the current bid set at $812,000 and the next minimum bid set at $825,000.
“The Ruby slippers are a vintage pair of red silk faille heels from the Innes Shoe Co. with uppers and heels covered in handmade sequined silk georgette, lined in white leather, and the leather soles are painted with red with orange felt adhered to the front base of the shoe. each shoe,” reads the Heritage Auctions description of the slippers.
“The bows are made from hand-cut husk burlap and are slightly different in size. Rhinestones surround the bows, which are filled with beads surrounding three central jewels.
If they are worth $3.5 million, then $800,000 is a steal! And boy, what a great Christmas gift that would be. Any rich collectors among us? You have one month to make your purchase.
