SMALLVILLE star Tom Welling shares original plans for the series finale

As you know, Tom Welling he had no desire to don the iconic Superman costume on The CW Smallville series. Even when the finale came, we never got to see him don the full Superman costume.

During the series’ final seasons, the producers toyed with the idea of having Clark Kent wear a Superman costume, but actually stuck to the “no flights, no tights” rule, which frustrated some fans.

In the last episode of the series, we get a shot of Clark ripping off his shirt to reveal the iconic “S,” but nothing more. But the original plan would have seen Welling don the full Superman costume. Unfortunately, this was something Welling fought against until the end.

During a recent interview with Stockholm Comic Con, Welling shared the original plans for the series’ end and confirmed that he pushed back on the full costume reveal. The actor also revealed how little of the Man of Steel costume he was wearing under the t-shirt he was wearing.

Welling said: “[In] one of the endings [scenes,] Clark opens his shirt and finally jumps off the building. This has been written [in] a completely different way. They had written where Clark saw the suit, then cut to him wearing it and putting on the boots.”

“You guys remember Kiefer Sutherland 24? The show just ended, and one of the things they did on that show, was a satellite image from space, and he was talking to [the] satellite images, knowing that Chloe, who he works with, is watching him and he is waving at her.

“He’s saying, ‘I can’t stay, but I have to go,’ and I remember the conclusion I got from that was that here’s a guy who’s going to go out there, he’s going to fight the good fight. We can’t go with him, but that allows our imaginations to believe he’s still out there.”

“I took that and when we were trying to figure that out in the series, I referenced the idea that this character is going to get out there, he’s going to be out there. We can’t accept that. And that’s how it all came about.

“There was a bit of discussion and limitation on what footage we were going to use, it was me and Greg Beeman who directed the episode. But the idea was that I would force them with a crane shot to go into gear.

“After that, the show was over, and because it was a crane shot, and no, I wasn’t going to let them take any other angles of it, because that’s what I wanted and then move on.”

“So the wardrobe department said, ‘So we’re just going to see this? Okay.’ So they made me a sleeveless crop top. They didn’t want to pay for the whole outfit and I didn’t care, I didn’t want to wear a suit! [laughs] So when I go like this [mimics the shirt rip going further,] If you had gone any further, you would have seen my belly button.”

Of course, after all these years since Welling, the actor admitted that he would love to don the Superman costume on screen. Well, it’s safe to say the ship has sailed.
