A screenplay for Who Framed Roger Rabbit 2 It exists and is tucked away in a drawer somewhere at Disney Studios. We’ve known about this script for years, but this is a film project that will never get made for multiple reasons.
Director Roberto Zemeckis he was recently a guest on the program Happy Sad Confused and during the conversation the screenplay written by the original screenwriters of the film was presented Jeffrey Price AND Peter S. Sailorwas brought up and Zemekis offered some insights into it and explained why the film will never see the light of day.
“Yes, there is good writing at Disney, but here’s what you need to know, and you know this: the current Disney would never make Roger Rabbit today.
“So they can’t make a movie with Jessica in the role. So Seaman and Price’s sequel script will never see the light of day, no matter how good it is. Because look what they did to Jessica at the theme park, they tied her up with a trench coat.
Zemeckis is referring to the way Jessica wears a trench coat and fedora in the artwork for Roger Rabbit’s Car Toon Spin rides in Disneyland parks.
Yes, I can see how things in the script written in the past would most likely not be politically correct in today’s climate. It may also be harder these days for Disney to partner with other companies to use their cartoon characters, like Warner Bros. with Looney Tunes.
Then there’s the other problem, Bob Hoskinswho played Eddie Valiant, was part of the story, and it simply wouldn’t work now as the actor died in 2014.
The director continued, “When the sequel was written… a lot of the story was that Eddie was no longer with us, but at certain points he would appear as a ghost. But I guess we wouldn’t be able to do that now.
It would be strange now to bring back Hoskins as a CGI ghost version of Eddie, and with all the issues surrounding bringing actors back to life with AI and CGI, it would be frowned upon.
Zemeckis previously spoke about the sequel, saying, “I don’t know where it fits into their universe. There’s no princess, so I don’t know where it would be. There’s a wonderful script at Disney that’s really good.” , but I don’t think it’s on their radar.”
Zemeckis said that the story is “more of a continuation than a sequel” and that it follows Roger and Jessica Rabbit “over the next few years of period films, moving from film noir to the world of the 1950s.”
It would have been nice to see this sequel made at the right time, but we will never see this script come to life.
