George Lucas’ Star Wars: The Phantom Menace originally included a major twist for the character of Obi-Wan Kenobi, and it would have been crazy! It would also change the way we watched the rest of the films in the series.
Artist Ian McCaig spoke to StarWars.com about the film and revealed that the twist would see Obi-Wan and his Master Qui-Gon Jinn swap places. Lucas changed that at the last minute.
McCaig said: “For a time, the older Jedi was called Obi-Wan and the younger Jedi was called Qui-Gon. It was very touching that at the end, when Obi-Wan dies and Qui-Gon defeats Darth Maul and remains with his Master as he dies, not only takes on his Master’s quest, but also takes on his name.
He continues: “Qui-Gon becomes Obi-Wan. That’s why when you see Alec Guinness in A New Hope, he lowers his hood and says, “Obi-Wan?” That’s a name I’ve never heard…’ Because it’s not Obi-Wan, it’s Qui-Gon. And at the very end, George changed it.”
It’s really crazy! This twist would have added a whole new layer to the file Star Wars saga. Is Alec Guinness’ Obi-Wan really Qui-Gon Jinn in disguise!?
The character’s entire behavior would take on a deeper meaning, as it would be shaped by the sacrifice of his previous identity.
It’s fascinating to consider how George Lucas’ last-minute decision changed the fabric of the series and our perception of Obi-Wan. While this twist never made it to the screen, it serves as an intriguing “what if” that adds richness Star Wars tradition, sparking our imaginations about the stories that could have been.
