JJ Abrams is producing an animated film adaptation of EMILY THE STRANGE

Warner Bros. Pictures Animation and Bad Robot are developing an animated film adaptation of Emily the Weirdthe beloved character of artist Rob Reger and his company Cosmic Debris.

JJ Abrams will produce the film with Pamela Ribon (Moana, Ralph breaks the Internet AND Nimona) set to write the screenplay.

Warner Bros released a video graphic below making the announcement.

Emily the Weird follows the story of a mysterious and eccentric 13-year-old girl with a unique style and an unusual view of the world. She is known for her dark clothes, raven hair, and distinctive scowl.

Emily is an outsider who embraces her individuality and strangeness, seeing the world through a lens that is both dark and whimsical. Together with his four black cats – Mystery, Miles, Sabbath and Neechee – he embarks on adventures that often blur the lines between the real and the surreal.

Emily lives in a world full of strange inventions, bizarre mysteries and dark humor. He’s a very funny character with a certain intelligence, curiosity, deadpan humor, and unapologetic self-expression that fans love.

The world of Emily the Weird includes horror, punk and gothic aesthetics and the character finds himself juggling friendships, strange encounters and strange predicaments.

Emily was first featured in the 1990s as an image on skateboards, stickers and T-shirts, before seeing her brand expand into a multimillion-dollar universe of characters, books, comics, games, apparel and merchandise.

Creator Rob Reger shared in a statement that “both the creative and executive teams we have on hand for the film are incredible. Everyone comes with a keen perspective along with an understanding and respect for the unique connection that Emily the Weird has to our “real world.”

“Emily celebrates all that is strange and different, which in turn makes the strange and unusual in all of us feel a little less alone. Bringing to life Emily’s universe and many of the mythologies we’ve created over the years is truly one of Emily’s best nightmares come true.”
