Star Wars AND Attack the block actor John Boyega is set to star next Danielle Deadwyler (Until) in the upcoming biopic Otis and Zelmawhere they will play the late soul legend Otis Redding and his widow Zelma Redding respectively.
Directed by an emerging director Channing Godfrey Popolithe music-based film chronicles the life of Otis Redding, considered one of the most impactful songwriters of our lifetime, with indelible hits including “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay,” “Respect,” “These My Arms,” “I’ve Loved You Too Long,” “Hard to Handle,” and my favorite, “Try a Little Tenderness.”
Redding’s burgeoning superstar career was tragically cut short when he died in a plane crash in 1967, leaving behind Zelma and three young children. He was 26 years old.
With revisions by Goffredo Popoli, Otis and Zelma is written by the acclaimed playwright, screenwriter and actress Donnetta Lavinia Grays.
The film “celebrates the 10 short years Otis and Zelma spent together and their everlasting love story after her passing,” an early synopsis of the project explains. “Zelma’s resilience and determination to preserve her musical legacy over the past 56 years fuels her, just as Otis’ love for Zelma has fueled him.”
News of the film, which has the full support of Zelma Redding and the Otis Redding family, comes as Otis will be honored posthumously with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Friday, October 4.
Fifth Season is producing the project alongside Stephanie Allain of Homegrown Pictures and Arron Saxe of Kinfolk Management + Media. Amos Newman, Claire Brooks of Homegrown Pictures, Boyega and Deadwyler will serve as executive producers.
