I’m a big fan of the 1991 western comedy The finest in the city and its 1994 sequel, The City’s Smarties 2. I re-watched the films a few months ago and they are much more relatable to me now than when I first saw them as a teenager.
Billy Crystal, Jack Palance, Daniele Sternand the rest of the cast were fantastic in those films and gave really entertaining performances.
After rewatching the films, I thought it would be interesting to see what some of those characters do after all these years. Well, according to Crystal, there have been discussions about it.
While speaking to CB, the actor was asked about the possibility The city’s smart-alecks 3 and he said, “Yeah, I mean, I don’t know how serious a conversation this is, but there’s some discussion about it, you know, what it would be, you know, to me that it should feel like it’s not a sequel but a film that could stand on its own.
Crystal continued to reminisce about her time making the first one The finest in the city and how much fun he had, saying, “Many moments in The finest in the city they were really fun because again, it was so different.
“Being on horses and working with cattle and obviously you know for me acting with Jack Palance was thrilling because he was in the first movie I ever saw and um, and then acting with him, it was amazing.”
Daniel Stern previously shared his interest in returning for a third film, saying, “Well, The finest in the city I would be more open minded realistically because there’s a whole new story to tell about me and Billy and [Jon] Lovitz maybe, or anyone who comes back and has a late-life crisis, instead of a mid-life crisis. Or I could see some stories.
As of now, a third The finest in the city the film isn’t in development, but it’s one of those film projects that I wouldn’t mind seeing made.
