Warner Bros Japan has released the trailer for a live-action adaptation of the manga/anime Cells at work! created by Akane Shimizuand it looks like it’s going to be a vibrant and insanely fun movie.
Welcome to the wonderland of the body’s functioning cells! This story brings to life “the inner workings of the human body by personifying cells, quickly captured the hearts of readers and became a sensation.”
The synopsis reads: “The smallest protagonist in the history of cinema – a human cell! There are a staggering 37 trillion cells in the human body. Oxygen-carrying red blood cells, bacteria-fighting white blood cells, and countless other cells work tirelessly day and night to protect your health and your life.
“High school student Niko (Mana Ashida) lives with his father, Shigeru (Sadao Abe). Thanks to Niko’s diligent nature and healthy lifestyle, the cells in his body always work happily. Meanwhile, inside Shigeru’s body, cells continually complain, exhausted from the brutal work environment, as he leads an erratic and unhealthy life.
“On the outside they may look like a happy father and daughter, but on the inside their body environment couldn’t be more different. As their lively days pass, pathogens begin to creep into their bodies… The most epic battle in the history of human cells, with Niko and Shigeru’s futures at stake, is about to begin!”
The film was directed by Hideki Takeuchi from a screenplay written by Yûichi Tokunaga. The film is said to be “A truly original visual feast that must be experienced on the big screen. This winter take a breathtaking journey inside your body.”
Warner Bros. Japan will release Cells at Work! in Japanese theaters on December 13, 2024. There is no U.S. release date yet.
