Last year it was announced that Lionsgate has big plans for the future John Wick franchise, and it was reported at the time that John Wick: Chapter 5 was being written and there are also several spin-offs in the works.
The news came directly from the president of the Lionsgate film group Joe Drake. So, I assumed so John Wick director Chad Stahelski and the studio had a team working John Wick: Chapter 5but apparently this is not the case.
Stahelski recently spoke to Business Insider and offered an update, saying, “When you fall in love, you fall in love. I’m in love with John Wick. I’m in love with the process and the story.
“Keanu [Reeves] and we both think, if we wake up tomorrow and there’s a good idea, we’ll do it. You bet your ass.”
So, it doesn’t seem like they have an idea they want to play with yet. Stahelski went on to say, “If we felt we weren’t robbing the fans and had more to give, I would do it tomorrow. I just don’t have that option right now.”
He added: “The other things I’m working on are great properties and I’m excited, but nothing will beat this.”
What’s funny about these comments is that the director had previously said that he and Reeves had done it John Wick movie ideas for days and that he could make these movies for the rest of his career.
Stahelski later stated that he had ideas already written for the future of the franchise. In fact, he has ideas for at least the next five films!
“I have notebooks and shitty notebooks behind me, John Wicks 5, 6, 7, 8, 9. We’ve had ideas for days. We just don’t have the story locked down. I have no interest in taking money to bring John Wick back for anything.
“Is this a character I like? Obviously. And if I did a couple of John Wick movies, great. Keanu would do one again in a second if we had a good story. We leave it open. I know the studio would like us to say we have another one.
So if he’s had an idea for days, then why does he now say he doesn’t have any ideas? If they don’t have ideas they shouldn’t brag about ideas they don’t have.
Staleski’s next project is a Highlanders reboot with Henry Cavill, which is expected to begin filming next year.
Next John Wick the upcoming film will be the spin-off film Dancerset between the third and fourth films. Ana de Armas protagonist of the film and will be released on June 6, 2025.
