Netflix shuts down its AAA Game Studio without releasing a single game

Netflix closed its AAA video game studio in Southern California two years after its launch and has never released a video game.

The studio was known as Team Blue and was one of the “few” game studios created by Netflix as part of a plan to make a big splash in the gaming industry.

Netflix has a lot of mobile games available on its mobile app at the moment, but this company’s plan was to create big-budget games for multiple consoles and gaming platforms.

So, they should have been Netflix games released for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PC and Xbox Series X|S. These games would be based on their original IP.

To help with this, Team Blue hired Overwatch executive producer Chacko Sonny in 2022, and in 2023 they brought in former Halo creative lead Joseph Staten, who left Xbox Game Studios and his work on Halo Infinite to join the game studio.

Team Blue also hired art director Rafael Grassetti, who previously worked on the God of War franchise at Sony. All three of these big hires are no longer with the company.

There was a strong talented team that could have created something really interesting, but unfortunately they never had the chance to launch something they were working on.

While Netflix is still developing games, none of these are big-budget AAA games that we’ll see on any of the big platforms.
