We know it Ian McKellen was contacted to reprise his role as director Gandalf Andy Serkis’ The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. This is something he has made clear he wants to do.
But this will most likely not be the only future project on the set of Middle-earth in which Gandalf will appear. The Hunt for Gollum screenwriter Filippa Boyens recently revealed in an interview with Empire that Gandalf is involved in most of the movie ideas they’re developing.
Boyens said: “We’re playing with a number of ideas, but most of those ideas include Gandalf. So Gandalf could potentially return for two live-action films.”
It was previously revealed that a variety of Middle-earth films are in the making that will “explore storylines yet to be told.” It looks like Gandalf will have a big future in some of these projects, which is exciting.
He had previously said that the script of The Hunt for Gollum was supposed to arrive next year and he explained to me: “Well, all I know is that they called me and told me that these films were going to be made, that [they’re] will mainly concern Gollum, Andy Serkis who played Gollum will direct the film and there will be a script coming in the new year […] and then I will judge whether I want to go back.”
McKellen continued: “But I would. I’d love to go back. I’d love to go back to New Zealand, number one. I also don’t like the idea of anyone else playing.” [Gandalf].”
I’m excited about the future of The Lord of the Rings movie franchise, and I just hope WB and the creative teams end up making great movies that tell incredible stories. It will be great to see Gandalf back in action!
