THE PENGUIN showrunner offers insights into Batman’s villainous character and Sophie’s surprising actions

Whoa…that fourth episode of The Penguin it was absolutely amazing! This is great storytelling and character development. The episode focused on Sofia Falcone, how she ended up in Arkham Asylum, what happened while she was there, and how it shaped her future.

Sophia is played by Cristina Milioti in the series, and gave an incredible performance! She was amazing in this episode! I was blown away when the episode ended.

The episode was also featured Marco Fortewho was recast as Carmine Falcone. One of the most surprising reveals was the introduction of Batman villain Magpie, played by Marie Botha.

Magpie’s story arc was set in Arkham and her encounters with Sofia. During a recent interview with CinemaBlend, showrunner Lauren LeFranc offered some interesting insights into this episode, titled “One Hundred Years,” and explains why Sofia made that brutal and bloody choice.

Prior to her time in Arkham, Sofia was on her way to taking over her father’s empire, but after becoming angry at her father by questioning her mother’s supposed suicide, which was actually murder, Carmine had her framed as the executioner for murder and it ended. to be locked up in Arkham Asylum.

This is where he meets Magpie. “My name is Gazza. Like the bird. Not “Daisy”. My stepmother called me Margaret, I told her not to do it and she wouldn’t listen. . . . Ooh, I bet there will be a lot of paparazzi at your trial. Nobody even wrote about mine. Is it fun to be famous? Oh, I bet it’s fun!”

Magpie has come to life in the series in an interesting way, and while I would have liked to see her more, that’s not going to happen.

The experiences and torture Sophia endured in Arkham eventually led her to the point where she decided to brutally kill Magpie. It was a shocking turn of events in the story that I didn’t see coming.

LeFranc talked about the twists during episode 4 and asked why she thought Sofia had to kill Magpie at that time, she explained:

“Well, the truth is, Sofia didn’t have to do it. He chose to do it. Evidently she will enter that scene in the devastated mess hall.

“She had a hint of hope left until Alberto told her she would never get out of Arkham. And all this time she felt upset. She felt innocent and her father had the power to put her there.

“She suspects that Dr. Ventress is working for her father and is punished severely and in the most terrible way by her own family.”

LeFranc went on to point out how the slightest suspicion pushed Sofia over the edge: “And that level of devastation and anger and anger that simmered under the surface for her.

“When she believes that Magpie might have been spying on her in the next cell and telling Dr. Ventress what she did, or what she thought or felt, the idea of another person killing her and doing something so terrible in that, that whether it’s true or not, something inside her breaks in that moment.”

She then unleashed her fury to make sure Magpie couldn’t harm her in any way. LeFranc went on to explain the inherent irony surrounding Sofia’s actions and what happened next, saying:

“Ironically, throughout the entire episode, she tells Dr. Ventress that she’s innocent, and she tells Dr. Rush that he would never kill women. And at this moment it breaks down and kills Magpie.

“And yet, because he chooses to do that – and obviously declares his innocence, ironically, in that moment – but because he does that, I think that’s part of the reason why he survives Arkham for the next 10 years.

“Because there is a strength in such a terrible environment to take such violent actions. And as a result she completely changed in that moment.

Sophia embraced that dark side of her and when she finally got out of Arkham it led to another brutal act of revenge against her family.

Again, this is some really great storytelling and character development. This show dives deep into the psyche of these characters and is done in a very smart way with strong writing.
