CEO of Tesla Elon Musk recently unveiled new prototypes for its Tesla Optimus robots along with the self-driving robotaxi (Cybercab) and autonomous Robovan, and I, Robot director Alex Proyas is accusing Musk of copying his robot designs from the film.
I don’t see it. They all look like different sci-fi designs to me. It’s not that Proyas’ work is entirely original as his film designs were inspired by other previous designs. Proyas is clearly not a fan of Musk and is just trying to pick a fight with him.
Musk shared comparison images and wrote on X: “Hey Elon, can I have my designs back please?”
As for the Optimus robot, during the reveal, it appeared to be unmanned at first, but was later revealed to be tele-operated by humans in real time. So, it wouldn’t have been as good as it would have been if the robots had operated without humans.
The Cybercab features wing doors, a design that has been around forever, and has no steering wheel or pedals.
Musk also revealed the Robovan, a popular self-driving bus that can carry cargo and/or up to 20 people.
After the event, there was a significant drop in Tesla shares, signaling investor disappointment. But then Musk’s SpaceX had their recent amazing rocket landing, which is pretty impressive! You win some, you lose some.
Proyas will shoot his next film in Sydney, Australia later this year, a satirical sci-fi film titled RUR
