It appears that HBO’s VELMA animated series has been cancelled

After two seasons and a Halloween special, it looks like Max’s adult-themed animation Scooby-Doo-inspired series Velma has been cancelled.

The news was originally posted by background artist Davey Cummings in a now-deleted Instagram post, in which he said, “There won’t be a season three, but I hope to work with these amazing and talented people again one day.”

Max has yet to make an official statement.

Velma was an unfunny comedy series that told the origin story of Velma Dinkley, the unsung and underrated brains of the Scooby-Doo Mystery Inc. gang.

This is one of those shows that I’m surprised was greenlit in the first place because it was needlessly mean-spirited. Everyone I know who attempted to watch it hated it, and judging by the Rotten Tomatoes scores, critics and audiences didn’t care either.

In Velma Season 2, “When an even scarier mystery grips Crystal Cove, Velma (Kaling) must find a way to balance her detective work with the demands of her newfound popularity before it’s too late.”

Meanwhile, “her faithful friends Daphne (Constance Wu)Norville (Sam Richardson) and Fred (Glenn Howerton) are powerless to help due to their own personal struggles and, worse yet… detention.”

In the Halloween special, which is titled Velma: This Halloween needs to be more special!“With only 24 hours to bring Velma back, the friends search for a dark spellbook while trying to avoid the wrath of a vengeful spirit.

“But as the annual sexy Halloween party approaches, Velma and the gang must face their greatest fears… if they want to make it out alive.”

The series is the protagonist Mindy Kaling, Glenn Howerton, Sam Richardson, Constance Wu, Russell Peters, Sarayu Blue, Jane Lynch, Wanda Sykes, Frank Welker, Nicole Byer, Gary Cole, Andia Winslow, Sara Ramirez, Nicola Braun, Luck Feimster, Jennifer Hale, Riccardo Gentile, Jason Mantzoukas, Saweetie, Debbie RyanAND Kulap Vilaysack.

What do you think about the possible cancellation of Velma?
