Rachel Zegler she kicked off her career in 2021 as Maria in the iconic musical History of the West Sidedirected by Steven Spielberg. He went on to play a supervillain in DC Shazam! The fury of the Gods. That year it appeared in Hunger Games followed, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakesand will next be seen in the teen horror comedy Year 2000which will be released this December.
Her next two films will see the actress play a princess, for the first time in the Netflix original animated film Enchanted; then in Disney’s live-action Snow Whitewhich sparked quite a bit of controversy. There have been many rumors and even confirmations about what will happen in this film, and some fans, or Disney purists, have been dismissing everything since production.
During a recent interview with Variety, Zegler explained that his film creates an alternate history regarding the princess’ name and said he tries to simply ignore “fans” who have been vocal about a Latina actress playing Snow White.
“It all came back to another version of ‘Snow White’ told in the story, where she survived a snowstorm that happened when she was little. And so the king and queen decided to name her Snow White to remind her of her resilience. One One of the central points of our film for any young woman or young man is to remember how strong you really are.”
Zegler went on to say that the backlash to being cast as Snow White boils down to basic misogyny and hatred.
“I’ve seen women being torn down my whole life, my whole career. We’ll be witnessing this for a long time, I’m afraid. Sometimes it may feel like we’re going backwards; it certainly was that way when it happened.” However, she simply stays online when people are terrible to her to maintain power: “I don’t like giving them the satisfaction of knowing they hurt me right now. You give them a lot of power by taking a break from social media.”
Zegler received a lot of backlash during the making of the live-action film when he criticized the original Disney animated film, saying that the director Marc Webb’s the approach to the story will be a little more enlightened regarding the female protagonist. Speaking to Extra TV during the 2022 D23 Expo, Zegler said that the original film features the prince basically haunting Snow White and called the whole thing “weird,” also noting that the entire focus is on Snow White’s love story rather than on his personal development. This isn’t that scandalous, yet Zegler faced a lot of hate. He said of the ordeal:
“In all honesty, it saddened me that it was taken this way, because I believe that women can do anything. But I also believe that they can do everything.”
Zegler said she simply wants girls and women who see the film to feel like they can proverbially “have it all,” and also clarified that the romance between Snow White and her prince is in the film… but it simply isn’t. the entire focus.
“I would never want to trap someone and say, ‘If you want love, then you can’t work.’ Or: “If you want to work, you can’t have a family.” That’s never been true. It can be very upsetting when things are taken out of context or jokes don’t land [that storyline] more – we always did; it just wasn’t what we were talking about that day.”
She went on to touch on her personal connection to Snow White.
“She was my mother’s favorite princess. When she was little, there weren’t many dark-haired princesses, and she was the one she could identify with.”
Zegler also points out that he looked The Brandy one 1997 version by Cinderellacharacterized Whitney Houston in the role of the fairy godmother, always as a child, and that Disney princesses can be played by anyone in as many adaptations as possible and it is always the same character.
“I grew up in a house where there was Cinderella. Of course we watched the cartoon. But the mind of a child is the most amazing thing, where it’s just like, ‘OK, that’s Cinderella.’ But the blonde-haired, blue-eyed, blue-dressed Cinderella from the 1950s cartoon is also Cinderella. Also, Hilary Duff is Cinderella in “A Cinderella Story.” I was able to understand these things at a young age. “
This doesn’t seem controversial. It seems like a no-brainer. But if people want to get angry about something, they will always find a way to do it. I can’t wait to see what they’ve done with this new one Snow Whiteand I think it’s nice to know that it won’t be a shot-for-shot remake of the original.
The film is also the protagonist Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen, Ansu Kabia in the role of the Hunter, Martin Klebba like Grumpy, e Andrea Burnap as Jonathan.
Snow White will be released in theaters on March 21, 2025.
