I was very excited to finally see the new film adaptation of Stephen KingIt’s the vampire novel Salem’s Lot. The film has received mixed reviews, but I can’t wait to watch it for myself.
The version of Salem’s Lot was directed by Gary Daubermannwho recently spoke about his experience making the film and how he found it difficult to fit that huge vampire story into a film that’s under two hours.
Speaking to SFX magazine, Dauberman said the project was “more challenging than I expected, and I predicted it would be really challenging!”
He continued, “My initial goal was to try to stay as true to the book as possible, but when the first draft started to feel like it was going to be as long as the book, I knew there would be some changes.” must be realized.”
Some of these changes to make the story work for the film included cutting some secondary characters. The director wanted to “focus on the core group of Ben, Mark, Susan, Dr. Cody, Matt and Father Callahan.”
Lewis Pullman (Bad times at El Royale, Top Gun: nonconformist) stars inside Salem’s Lotand will assume the role of author Ben Mears“a man who returns to his childhood home in Jerusalem’s Lot in search of inspiration for his next book only to find that his hometown is under the grip of a vampire, leading him to join a ragtag group who will fight the evil presence. “
When previously we talked about Gary Daubermannfilm directed by Pullman, Pullman said: “It’s a scary thing to do these remakes, man. It’s like, this and [Top Gun: Maverick]there is so much pressure that it is difficult to create a blend to be successful.
“But Gary Dauberman, the director, really cares about doing the book justice. Also, the previous adaptation was split into two parts, because it’s a really heavy book and there are so many different moving parts and so many characters.
“So there are some parts where Gary had to push to find what was really the heart of the film to keep, but for the most part he’s really faithful to the book and keeps a lot of the original dialogue. He’s a Stephen King hound, so he doesn’t want to get Stephen dirty.”
He added: “So I think he’s in good hands, Gary’s a really smart guy who has a keen eye for things. I think he doesn’t just lean into jump scares, but he leans into the more conceptual and visual stuff that, rather than to a shock that fades from your body in the next five minutes, something that is more visual, like an imprint that is imprinted on your retinas like a disturbing image that you will wake up from in the middle of the night and from which you cannot shake the your head.”
Although the film received mixed reviews, King was impressed by it and his support helped the film get released. He previously said: “Between you and me, on Twitter, I saw the new SALEM’S LOT and it’s pretty good. Old school horror movie: slow build, big payoff.”
King previously spoke about the film several months ago, saying, “It feels like a horror version of slow-burn movies like THE GREAT ESCAPE. It’s very well constructed.
“There are deviations from the book that I don’t agree with, but overall faithful. Best scene: Danny Glick in the hospital, trying to grab a bag of blood. Glick’s scene could have been directed by John Carpenter in his prime.”
Salem’s Lot will be released on October 3rd.
