Terence Winter Shares Details On His Abandoned Gotham City PD Spin-Off Series THE BATMAN

Terence Winter (Boardwalk Empire, The Sopranos) was previously working on developing a spin-off series for The Batman which would focus on the Gotham City Police Department.

The series was canceled, but Winter is now sharing some details about the story it was supposed to tell and why it was ultimately dropped.

When the series was initially announced, it was explained that the show will “build on the film’s exploration of the anatomy of corruption in Gotham City, launching a new Batman universe across multiple platforms.

“The series will expand the world depicted in the film and further explore Gotham’s myriad of complex characters.”

Winter was developing the series with Matt Reeves, and when he spoke about what the show would entail during a guest appearance on The Playlist’s Bingeworthy podcast, he said: “The idea was to make a cop show set in the ’70s.

“Something that seemed by Sidney Lumet 1981 crime and detective drama Prince of the citybut in the Gotham City Police Department. He should have had that [‘70s] Touch.

“He was supposed to be a modern-day cop who’s like a third-generation Gotham City cop, and Gotham City was largely corrupt. And this is the guy we meet in modern day who realizes he’s kind of on the wrong side.

“Batman was someone who lived in that world, but you never really saw him. And it was really all about the police department and this guy.”

Winter went on to explain that while they were developing the show, Reeves was “not sold” on what they were developing, and this led to Winter leaving the project which was ultimately scrapped.

When The penguin series was brought up in conversation, Winter said, “That’s great, good for them. Like I said, you know, that was Matt’s idea originally, and, you know, more power to [him]Sometimes you’re in tune creatively, sometimes you’re not.

“Or you start off on the wrong foot thinking, ‘Oh, we should do this, but you know what? It just doesn’t work.’ Also, because there was Gothamthe show Gotham It definitely took place in the Gotham City Police Department.

“[It] in a way he trampled on our idea a little, even if ours would have been totally different. I think Penguin It’s awesome. I think they did a great job.”

It looks like they were developing an interesting GCPD series, and it’s a shame that it ended up working out.
