ROBOCOP Series Continues With James Wan and Peter Ocko

Amazon MGM Studios is moving forward with a RoboCop series and is in development by the executive producer James Wan and showrunner Peter Oco (Lodge 49).

The series will reimagine the premise of the films and focus on “a giant tech conglomerate that partners with the local police department to introduce a technologically advanced officer to combat rising crime: a police officer who is part man, part machine.”

Before Amazon bought MGM, another RoboCop-inspired series was in development, focusing on a young Dick Jones and the rise of Omni Consumer Products.

RoboCop creator and screenwriter And Neumeier was attached to that project. He had previously said about it: “I’m working with these two writers, Dave Parkin and Rob Gibbs, who brought this idea to a friend of mine who’s a TV producer, who then brought it to me.

“The first time I heard it, I knew it was a great idea because I could see all the things you could do with it. It’s such an interesting character.”

Talking about the ideas they’re playing with, Neumeier goes on to say, “There’s this idea of doing things about business and law enforcement in the city of Detroit a minute and a half into the future, it would be a way to do all kinds of stories about business and technology, Silicon Valley, corporations, snakes in suits, cops, all of that. It’s a wonderful, rich tapestry.

“So we talked about it and I think we have an interesting story. It’s fun to work with a younger version of the Dick Jones that we meet in RoboCop. He’s a corporate predator who’s realized [in the move] but no one necessarily starts out as the bad guy.

“So it’s going to be about the evolution of Richard Jones into Dick Jones, the history of OCP and how the world is moving into the future, how the corporate world is behaving.”

For me, it’s much more interesting than telling a story we’ve already seen. But Hollywood loves to rehash old stories. I mean, we’ve already seen two similar RoboCop movies, do we really need another one that tells the same story?
