AGATHA ALL ALONG Creator Jac Schaeffer on Hiding Joe Locke’s Character Identity

The Marvel Show Agatha for life kicked off last week with a strong start. We got to see Agatha (Author: Kathryn Hahn) was freed from the spell she was under, and we were introduced to her new coven, including Patti LuPoneThe Lilia, Sasheer ZamataI’m Jennifer, Ali AhnaAlice, and returning actress Debra Jo RuppSharon is.

We were also introduced to Aubrey SquareRio Vidal, also a superfan of Agatha, at this point was just called Teen, played by Joe LockeNot only was this character’s identity kept secret from fans, but as we watched the first two episodes, we saw Agatha discover that she was unable to discover Teen’s true identity.

When he says his name, his mouth is covered with a thin black line resembling a signature, and later, when he tells Agatha where he comes from, his voice becomes inaudible.

The creator of the show, Jac Schaefferrecently sat down with Variety to talk about the show and the mystery of “Teen,” and said:

“I don’t like to hide things from the public, only to be like, ‘Boo!’ There’s no art to it. So when we talked about obscuring who she is, the first question is, why? What’s the point of that? The answer is, it’s about the effect that her mystery has on Agatha. What does it do to her? How does it motivate her? How does it affect her emotionally?”

Fans have assumed from the start that Teen will end up being Wanda’s son, Wiccan, but since the episodes have been released, people have been making wild guesses, with some even trying to measure the movement of Teen’s cheeks and chin when his mouth is sealed to see if they can figure out what he’s saying. When asked if these kinds of guesses will bear any fruit, Schaeffer laughs and says:

“That’s what I would say: It’s not the first place I would look. It’s not entirely irrelevant: but there are other places to look.”

She’s no stranger to fan theories: from the final episodes, WandaVision spawned a small cottage industry of feverish conjecture about what surprises might be in store in the final episodes, virtually all of which (Doctor Strange! Magneto! Mephisto!) turned out to be wildly wrong.

“It still stops my heart,” Schaeffer says. “My concern is maximum enjoyment for the viewer, so I get nervous when people get ahead of them. I have to trust that humans are capable of deciding what kind of experience they want. But I comfort myself with the knowledge that it’s a tortuous path and I hope it’s enjoyable.”

She sighs.

“It hurts my heart a little when I see the reactions of people who have ended up being disappointed by things. It hurts me a little. But when I got into ‘Agatha,’ it wasn’t at the forefront of my mind. I just can’t control it. It’s a level of fandom that’s beyond me.”

I think we’ll just have to wait and see how this story unfolds. I love being a part of a journey through an emotional and captivating show with characters that keep us on our toes. Episode 3 of Agatha for life will be released this Wednesday, with a new episode every Wednesday, and the series will conclude with 2 episodes on October 30th.
