John Cena to Star in Mattel Film and Apple Original Films’ MATCHBOX

John Cena is set to star in Matchboxa new live-action feature film produced by Apple Original Films, Skydance and Mattel Films.

The film will be directed by Sam Hargrave and is inspired by Mattel’s iconic line of die-cast toy vehicles. The screenplay was written by David Coggeshall AND My Friend Jonathan Tropper.

There are no details on what the story will involve. The Matchbox toy line was introduced in 1953 by Lesney Products, which revolutionized the die-cast toy car industry with its innovative approach to miniature vehicles.

The Matchbox brand was invented in 1953 by car enthusiast Jack Odell to solve a challenge he posed to his daughter: she could only bring a toy to school if it was small enough to fit in a matchbox.

So named for its ability to fit into a matchbox, the brand’s early success was driven by affordable, well-crafted models of real vehicles that kids could easily collect. Matchbox initially focused on cars, but expanded its lineup to include trucks, planes, and even construction vehicles.

The brand continues to be a beloved part of toy culture, celebrated for its nostalgic value and its continued dedication to creating high-quality, realistic die-cast vehicles that appeal to kids and collectors alike.

Matchbox will be produced by Skydance David Ellison, Dana Goldberg AND Don GrangerAND Robbie Brenner for Mattel Films.
