Colin Farrell he was awesome as Penguin in The Batmanand it looks like he’ll give another fantastic performance in The penguin series. But playing this character is not easy for him.
Farrell enjoyed the opportunity to play this character, but he also hated it, and isn’t sure he’s ready to do it again, because of the strain it puts on him.
During a recent interview with Total moviethe actor was asked if he was ready to get back in the makeup chair and he replied, “I don’t know, man,” grimacing.
He continued: “Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed it, but it kind of bothered me. Towards the end, I was bitching and moaning to anyone who would listen, saying I just fucking wanted it to end.
“I tried to remind them that I had a ‘grumpy gratitude.’ I was still grateful and still honored: I grew up watching Burgess Meredith [who played the role in the ’60s TV series]Then Danny DeVito [in Tim Burton’s 1992 film Batman Returns] he was my Penguin, so being part of the lineage of that narrative, I felt really privileged. But ultimately…”
He continued, “It’s not that I didn’t know who I was and I was going out and burning cars and stuff, but… if you take what Matt Reeves created and then what Lauren [LeFranc, showrunner] what did Mike do? [Marino, prosthetics and make-up designer] done and put them all together, it was a really powerful experience.”
So, to do it again, Farrell would have to be willing to deal with the physical changes and get back into the mindset of the character.
The actor said: “Lauren said, ‘Look, if you could find a way that made sense, would you talk about it?’ And I said, ‘Absolutely.’ And maybe in a year I would. But when I was done I was like, ‘I never want to wear that f**king dress and that f**king head again.'”
Farrell obviously just needs some time off from playing Penguin for a while. But I’m sure we won’t be seeing the last of him in this role.
