HBO is looking for a new trio of young actors to play the iconic roles of Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger in their upcoming TV series.
This week, the cable network officially launched an open casting call for children in the UK and Ireland to audition for the lead roles in the HBO original series.
The memo likely revealed the series’ planned start date for production, as it states that the young actors will be between the ages of 9 and 11 in April 2025.
There are seven months left, which is the time it took to find Daniel Radcliffe in 2000 for the title role in Harry Potter film franchise when he was 11. His co-stars, Emma Watson AND Rupert Grintwere 10 and 12 respectively.
Deadline reports that the casting notes include language that has become industry standard, stating, “We are committed to inclusive and diverse casting.
For each role, please submit qualified performers, regardless of ethnicity, gender, disability, race, sexual orientation, gender identity, or any other basis protected by law, unless otherwise specifically stated.”
This is an approach that the fantasy franchise has taken in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child theatrical production, which chose Noma Dumezweni for the role of Hermione.
The first round of the Open Call is for self-recorded auditions. Candidates are asked to submit two videos, speaking in their native accent.
In the first, which lasts less than 30 seconds, they have to recite a short story or poem, but “nothing Harry Potter.” In the second, which lasts up to a minute, they are asked to talk about themselves and “a family member, friend, or pet they are particularly fond of.”
The castings follow the recent hiring of Succession duo Francesca Gardiner AND Mark Mylod as a writer and director on Harry Potter series, respectively, after a careful search for showrunners.
The series, which originally aired on Max before moving to HBO, is described as a “faithful” adaptation of JK Rowling’s books and will feature a new cast.
