Nicolas Winding Refn is preparing his next film project which will be shot in Tokyo

Nicolas Winding Refn (Guide, only God forgives) is preparing to shoot his next feature film, his first since The Neon Demon.

Since 2016, Refn has worked primarily in directing television programs such as Too old to die young AND Copenhagen CowboysSo it will be nice to see a Refn project on the big screen again.

According to Variety, Refn will shoot his new film in Tokyo and it will be in both English and Japanese. There are no story details, but it is an original story that will “have a lot of glitter and a lot of sex and violence.”

Speaking about the current state of film, he said: “It’s a really interesting time to be making films because it’s such a chaotic situation. So to go back and make a feature film for the cinema again is almost like—not starting over—but with all the changes in our societies in the last five years and the changes in technology, it almost feels like the right thing to do for me.”

He added, “Feature film is still the mother of all media,” and says he’s eager to “relive that process. I think it’s hard for me to escape my self-indulgent identity in creativity. So it’s always going to be me.”

These comments come after he stated several years ago that “cinema is dead.”

Refn also teased that the film will feature themes and characters inspired by his other films “Only God Forgives” and “The Neon Demon,” both of which had a sleek, graphic feel.

Refn is also working on two other projects, one of which is gaming-related. He said he is “very fascinated by what technology can offer” and that it is “the only art form that continues to evolve with creative possibilities.”

Refn asked: “In a way, if the Lumière brothers, when they invented cinema, had invented video games first, what would the world be like?”

One of these other projects could be the adaptation of The famous five adventure novels.

I’m curious to see what will come of all these projects he’s working on.
