J.R.R. Tolkienthe character of The Lord of the RingsTom Bombadil, will make his big debut in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2. This is the first time the character has been brought to life in a live-action film, as he was not included in Peter Jackson’s films.
Bombadil is played by James Bond actor Rory Kinnear in the series and, in a recent interview with Games Radar+, offers new details and insights into what this character will be like in the series.
Kinnear began: “Well, I think in terms of other adaptations, I think Peter Jackson said this, it doesn’t necessarily move the story forward, particularly in his narrative.
“But in the pages and in people’s imaginations, he’s this incredible character who has so much knowledge and so much humor and so much life in him, as well as all of humanity and history and the land. That’s kind of representative of everything that Earth and Middle-earth is.”
Kinnear went on to explain that they will be able to explore the character in more depth thanks to the series’ extended storytelling, saying, “Obviously, versus episodic TV with multiple seasons, you have more time to delve into these stories.
He goes on to say that they will use the character in a different way than Tolkien did: “The way that [showrunners] Justice of the Peace [Payne] and Patrick [McKay] tell the story, they’re able to create a role for him that isn’t necessarily the one he has in the books. So, as they’re using that character, they’re using him in a different way than Tolkien did.”
Judging from what we know about the character so far, his main point of contact in the story will be The Stranger. Actor Daniel Weyman teases a bit more about what to expect from those interactions.
Weyman said: “Even though he may not be in every scene in the books, he’s actually always there because he’s so extraordinary.
“He keeps you company on your journey through the books, and I think that’s a great thing about Tom on this journey for The Stranger. His presence is so extraordinary that even when you’re not with him, he’s kind of in your mind because of how he’s interacted with you.”
Kinnear adds: “And the way Tolkien writes him, he’s so open and opaque in a way that people can project a lot onto him. I think again that’s his power, both in terms of the reader’s imagination, both in terms of the potential for interactions with The Stranger, and also in terms of his role throughout The Rings of Power.”
The series is set “thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’S The Hobbit AND The Lord of the Ringsand will take viewers back to a time when great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, unlikely heroes were tested, hope hung by the thinnest thread, and the greatest villain Tolkien had ever created threatened to plunge the entire world into darkness.
“Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows a cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared resurgence of evil in Middle-earth.
“From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains, to the majestic forests of the Elven capital of Lindon, to the extraordinary island kingdom of Númenor, to the farthest corners of the map, these kingdoms and characters will leave a legacy that will live on long after they are gone.”
In season two, Sauron has returned. Cast out by Galadriel, without an army or allies, the rising Dark Lord must now rely on his own cunning to rebuild his strength and oversee the creation of the Rings of Power, which will allow him to bind all the peoples of Middle-earth to his sinister will.
“Building on the epic scope and ambition of the first season, Amazon’s second season The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power immerses even its most beloved and vulnerable characters in a growing tide of darkness, challenging each of them to find their place in a world increasingly on the brink of destruction.
“Elves and dwarves, orcs and men, wizards and Harfoots… as friendships are tested and kingdoms begin to fracture, the forces of good fight ever more bravely to hold on to what matters most to them… themselves.”
The Rings of Power Season 2 will debut on Prime Video on August 29.
