Denzel Washington Previews His Retirement in New Interview “There Are Very Few Movies Left That I’m Interested In and Need To Do”

Denzel Washington He is one of the greatest actors of our time, having won two Academy Awards and been nominated for eight others.

He has had memorable roles in films such as Glory, Malcolm X., Training day, Philadelphia, Flight, Fences, The equalizer, The Tragedy of Macbethand his next film, Gladiator II.

There have been many other film roles, but these are some of the most significant, and Washington feels there aren’t many more like them in his career.

During a recent interview with Empire magazine to promote her part in Ridley Scott’s sequel, Gladiator 2Washington admitted that the upcoming epic was one of the few films left to make that still interested him. He explained:

“There are very few films that interest me left to make, and I have to draw inspiration from the director. Ridley has inspired me a lot.”

It helped that Washington had worked with Scott before and had a wealth of experience making the 2007 film. American Gangster together. The actor said:

“We had a great first go-around and now here we are. He’s busy. He’s excited about life and his next movie. He’s an inspiration. We should all want to feel that way at 86.”

The sequel stars Paul Mescal as the adult Lucius, son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen) and nephew of Commodus, the original film’s antagonist played by Joaquin Phoenix.

The story picks up years later, with Lucius now living in the North African region of Numidia, where his mother sent him as a child, as it was just outside the reach of the Roman Empire. Events bring Lucius back to Rome as a gladiator, where he makes new enemies and reunites with his mother. Washington plays Macrinus, a wealthy power broker in Rome who keeps a stable of gladiators for sport.

Gladiator 2 will be released in theaters on November 22.
