August 2024 was rich in film events. To complete the cultural program of the summer, we propose to organize a marathon to watch the films that will be shown at the Moscow International Film Week.
In the last week of August, the capital will become the center of the film industry, where everyone can communicate with Russian directors and actors, as well as world stars. During master classes, you will be able to feel like a film director and create your own mini-movie.
40 participating countries will be represented at the film festival, 20 of which will present their films and the rest will give conferences. A total of 70 films will be shown within the scope of MMNK-2024. By the way, you can also take the opportunity to go to street shows when the weather is warm.
The event officially started on August 23 and will last until the 28th. We carefully studied the program and selected the most interesting pictures for relaxation and personal development.
“The Hurricane”, dir. Gaspard Noe (France)
An unusual film about old age by Gaspar Noe, director of Irreversible. The plot focuses on an elderly married couple: he is an Italian film expert (of course! Played by the father of the giallo genre, director Dario Argento) and she is a psychiatrist (Françoise Lebrun). He has a weak heart and advanced dementia. They live the rest of their lives slowly drifting apart. Their son (Alex Lutz) tries to help his father finish a book and take care of his mother, while his own life falls apart.
“Red Sails”, dir. Pietro Marcello (France, Italy, Germany)
In fact, the film, which is translated as “Flight”, is not a coincidence that it got such a name in the Russian translation. Pietro Marcello, who brought “Martin Eden” to the big screen, was inspired this time by Alexander Greene’s “Scarlet Sails”. True, the director slightly changed the mise-en-scene and the names of the characters and moved the action to France in the 1920s. At the center of the story is Juliet (Juliette Juan), the daughter of an old sailor who believes in a sorcerer’s prophecy that one day her lover will come to her on a ship with scarlet sails. One day, the adventurous pilot Jean (played by Louis Garrel) learns about this prophecy and decides to fulfill his dream.
“A quiet place. History of M”, dir. Vardan Tozhia (Croatia, North Macedonia)
After the disaster, the world was invaded by zombies. Marco, a fatherless child, tries to survive in a world full of dangers. The important thing is not to make a sound so they don’t come…
“Two Thousand Songs of Farida”, dir. Yolkin Tuychiev (Uzbekistan)
Central Asia is at war. While the people are chained by the terror of the Bolsheviks, the conformist Komil seems to notice nothing. He does not care about the problems of the world, the gap between the rich and the poor. All he dreams of is to have his own continuation. He marries the young beauty Farida in the hope that she will give him a child.
“King of the Sky”, dir. Liu Xiaoshi (PRC)
A blockbuster film about the conflict between Chinese and American aviation. When the US invades Chinese airspace, young pilot Lei Yu (played by K-drama star Wang Yibo) fights back. The commander invites him to be selected for a squad that will test the next generation of fighters. There, the hero meets his rival pilot Deng Fan.
“Doll. Reincarnation of Evil”, dir. Sophon Sakdaphisit (Thailand)

Suddenly, the woman learns that her neighbors perform a strange ritual every night at 4 a.m. After her husband gets the same tattoo as their neighbors and some entities start approaching her daughter, Ning decides to confront the dark forces.
“The Bear Problem”, dir. Eduardo Schuldt (Peru, USA)
A cartoon about Mila, a bear, and her brother, who live in the forest and cause real chaos. One day they lose each other. They have to live many adventures and make new friends before they meet again. This is a story about true friendship in the heart of the forest, which will seem like a real amusement park to the viewer.
“Kalki. AD 2898”, dir. Nag Ashwin (India)
The budget of the film, one of India’s most expensive blockbusters, is estimated at around $72 million. The world is on the brink of an apocalypse: in the year 2898, the Ganges River has dried up and disappeared from the face of the earth, and the lack of resources is driving people to commit crimes. Kasi, the only city where there is still a glimmer of life, has become a refuge for the survivors. An ancient prophecy says that only Kalki, an incarnation of the god Vishnu, can save the world. Therefore, a group of rebels from Shambhala will kidnap an unborn baby, who they believe is an avatar of Vishnu, from a laboratory.
