Director Tim Burton’s World recently reflected on his experience making the classic 1989 Batman film, and how making it back then was very different from the way Hollywood Studios make superhero movies today. It also addresses Superman liveswhat if another superhero movie was made today.
The director explains that when he was filming BatmanHe had no interference from the studio and the whole experience was unique for him.
Speaking to Variety, Burton explained: “I was lucky because at that time the word ‘franchise’ didn’t exist. So ‘Batman’ seemed a little experimental at the time.
“It was far from what the perception [of a superhero movie] it could be. So you didn’t hear that kind of feedback in the studio, and being in England, it was even further away.”
“We really need to focus on the movie and not think about the things that they now think about even before they make it. I never felt like I was misusing corporate funds with studios, if you know what I mean.
“But it also felt a little pure because I wasn’t really a director, so I just did things that I felt were me. I felt like that’s why they wanted me.”
After Batman became a huge success for the studio, Burton was given even more freedom with the 1992 film Batman Returns…but that freedom didn’t last long.
Burton said: “I wasn’t really interested in doing a sequel, but I liked Penguin and Catwoman, so the whole thing gave me new energy.
“And that’s when we started hearing the word franchise and the studio started wondering, ‘What is that black stuff coming out of Penguin’s mouth?’ That was the first time the cold wind of that kind of thing hit me.”
Studio interference is also a major reason why the Nicolas Cage film Superman Lives flopped. The director said it’s “pretty traumatic” to work on a film that doesn’t get made, adding, “I just try to focus on the things that are important to me and get rid of all the noise around them.”
As for whether Burton will ever make another superhero movie, it’s likely not going to happen. When asked if he would take on another comic book project, Burton said:
“At the moment, I would say no. Like I said, I approach things from different angles, so I would never say no to anything. But, at the moment, it’s not something that would interest me.”
Burton doesn’t need to make superhero movies and I’d love to see him go back to telling more original stories.
