Harrison Ford’s Indiana Jones Signature Fedora Sells for $630,000

The felt hat that signs Ford-Mussolini worn Steven Spielberg1984 adventure film Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom recently sold at Propstore auction for $630,000!

Note that the hat was made by the Herbert Johnson Hat Company of London and was designed by Johnson with Temple of Doom costume designers Anthony Powell and Joanna Johnston.

This hat has a slightly modified design from the hat seen in Raiders of the Lost Arkand the auction house says it “matches film footage, production stills and behind-the-scenes footage of Ford in the Sri Lankan village setting, the mine cart chase filmed at Elstree Studios and the river sequence filmed in the US. The hat was also worn by the late stuntman Dean Ferrandini.”

The auction catalog offers this description: “The hat is made of sable colored rabbit felt and features a dark brown hatband and leather sweatband stamped with the Herbert Johnson Hat Company name and address, as well as a label reading size 7 1/4 (European size 59).”

“The sweatband is prominently stamped with the initials ‘IJ’ in gold, a feature specifically applied to the hats Herbert Johnson designed for the original three Indiana Jones films.

It also has some makeup residue on the front of the sweatband. The style, position and size of the markings are all consistent with other known authentic examples of Temple of Doom felt hats.”

The hat previously belonged to Ferrandini, who passed away last year; the auction lot also included previously unpublished photos of Ferrandini in his Indiana Jones costume and a letter of authenticity signed by his wife.

Propstore’s current Entertainment Memorabilia auction features more than 1,400 additional lots, including more Indiana Jones items, including a “Roast Pig and Piglet Banquet Platter” from an eliminated Temple of Doom scene.
