Peter JacksonThe daughter of Catherine Jackson is following in his father’s footsteps and has directed a short film titled Attachment theoryand a trailer has been released.
Katherine Jackson grew up working in all kinds of films. Now, at 28, she’s stepped behind the camera to make her own film, which she also wrote.
Attachment theory is about “an agoraphobic woman who relies on an AI machine to administer her anti-anxiety medication during a global pandemic. Motivated by a desire to receive a 5-star rating, the machine engages in aberrant behavior that becomes downright scary.”
Speaking to Deadline, Jackson spoke about his film, saying, “The film came to me during the pandemic, when we were all isolated and became more dependent on technology.
“I saw a lot of people suffering from mental health issues, anxiety, depression, agoraphobia. This was the worst-case scenario of developing an addiction to that technology.”
He continued, “I see it as a calling card to make a low-budget horror film, and I have in mind one that is a thriller with a science fiction element.”
He called his time in New Zealand “a magical childhood, how could it not be when you grow up surrounded by Hobbits, wizards, Elves and Orcs?”
She goes on to say that her mother and father “were not allowed on the set, I forbade both of them from coming to see me. I had a clear vision in my mind of what I wanted.
“My father is a filmmaker at heart, and his impulse is to contribute an opinion. Those opinions would have been constructive and would have made my film better, I’m sure.
“But I think the only way to learn is to make mistakes, that it’s better to follow your instincts. Even if you make mistakes, you’ll learn more than if someone told you what to do. This whole short film has been a learning experience for me.”
She added: “They’ve done nothing but support me. I’ve chatted with them quite a bit when Dad showed me early cuts of stuff he’s done, and Mum showed me some scripts she’s done.
“They asked me for feedback. But we have different styles. There were ideas that I pitched to my dad and he was like, I don’t quite understand. I ran them through the draft of this, my mom immediately got the AI element, but it took a moment for my dad to click with it.
“But you have to do it for yourself and if it resonates with you, that’s what you have to go with.”
Check out the trailer below and let us know what you think. The film will be making the rounds at film festivals. It looks like it’s going to be really good!
