The crazy fights in K-Pop Demon Hunter are taken from this ultra-violent Korean action film that few people know about

An unexpected feature of the animated film “K-Pop Demon Hunter” was its vividly choreographed action scenes. They were created by a team of choreographers with experience in the pop industry.

One of the creators’ main goals was to make the viewer feel the influence of Korean pop music and anime in the characters’ every move. To achieve this, the battle sequences resembled stage performances, and special visual effects added fun and lightness. As animation director Josh Beveridge said:

“All you have to do is add a little sparkle and even the toughest clash turns into a dance instead of a brutal fight.”

Particular emphasis was placed on small characteristic movements characteristic of the performances of pop groups, which clearly distinguished these episodes from the usual action films. Choreographers who worked with real idols integrated the developments of the scene into the animation. This approach allowed the heroes to show individuality even in the midst of battle.

The makers also took inspiration from the 2017 South Korean thriller ‘The Villainess’, a film directed by Jung Byung-gil, which rethinks the theme of hired killers. It was distinguished by its dynamism, unusual camera work and battle rhythm. The director and animators have taken the most expressive details of the cinematography and pacing to make the fight scenes look as energetic as possible – while maintaining the film’s family-friendly format.

In three months, the film attracted a record number of views on the online platform: 325.1 million. This made it the most popular in Netflix history. The project gained worldwide fame and caused widespread discussion on social networks.

The authors of the film are considering the possibility of creating a sequel, as well as a short version. Work on developing the franchise continues. The film is now available to watch on Netflix and new screenings are also planned in cinemas.
