The creator of X-Men ’97, Handsome DeMayorecently revealed that Marvel Studios and Disney “stripped” him of season two credits because of a “gay pride” post he shared on Instagram.
DeMayao, who was fired from the series several months ago, recently shared the following about X: “First of all, I’m so grateful to have worked on #XMen97, collaborating with some incredibly talented people.
“Creating this revival has been a dream come true and the support the fans have shown is so touching. However, I felt pressured to speak out after leaving the show.”
He continued: “The above is a piece of #XMen fan art I posted on Instagram for Gay Pride in June. On June 13, #Marvel sent me a letter informing me that they had removed my season 2 credits because of the post. Sadly, this is the latest in a series of troubling things I’ve suffered while working on XMen97 and #Blade.
“I’ll have more to say soon, but I need to step back from social media to find a safer space to be open, proud, and nerdy. Stay tuned.”
You can see the fan art image he shared in the post below, which apparently Marvel and Disney didn’t appreciate very much.
Marvel later released its own statement saying that DeMayo was fired from the series in March 2024 for “serious” conduct.
The statement reads: “Mr. DeMayo was terminated in March 2024 following an internal investigation. Given the egregious nature of the findings, we immediately severed ties with him and he has no further affiliation with Marvel.”
DeMayo also worked as a writer and producer for Marvel’s live-action series Knight of the Moon series and as a writer on Lama reboot. He had also completed work on the second season of X-Men ’97 and was reportedly planning a third season of the series at the time of his firing.
