from Pixar Inside Out 2 introduced several new emotional characters that entered the mind of the teenage character Riley, but other characters were originally planned that did not make the final cut of the film.
New characters Anxiety, Envy, Embarrassment, and Ennui have almost been joined by characters like Shame and Guilt. This information was revealed by writer Meg LeFauve in an interview with CB.
LaFauve explained, “We had an idea fisherman named Gail, and we went to the Facts and Opinions factory and saw how they were being made. And it was super fun.
“I think emotionally, we really tried for a long time to put Shame in the movie, and Guilt. Shame is more self-loathing, that thing that attacks you. And we talked to a lot of experts about that.
“The difference with shame is it’s not really a big deal to you because it’s just about attacking you. Whereas guilt is about taking responsibility and it’s a behavior, not who you are.”
The writer went on to explain why they ultimately didn’t use the character, saying, “But it never quite worked. And for this version, because we really needed to focus on Anxiety, it started to bifurcate the plot too much.
“But I think we all have that critic who despises himself in our heads, and we have to go there a little bit with the screenings and how anxiety can start to affect you. So I think that’s in the film, but it was something we explored and ultimately didn’t feel was fruitful for this version.”
LeFauve also said that Procrastination Land was almost a thing: “I love Procrastination Land. I was sad it didn’t make it, but I understand why.
“I loved watching them run around a pretty empty lot and then all of a sudden, ‘Where’s Anger?!’ And he’s sitting there watching TV, and it was really, really funny. And Fear had a moment to inspire them all to keep going, but I understand why he didn’t make it.”
Shame and guilt would have been interesting to explore, but ultimately they weren’t really necessary. The film worked just fine without them.
I liked it Inside Out 2 and the story it told. This is one of those Pixar films that I was able to relate to on so many levels.
