My name is Ryan Reynolds. was the driving force behind his lovable R-rated character Deadpool. He brought the character to life seemingly only in the way he could, and now that he has merged with Marvel and is enjoying the success of Deadpool and Wolverinerecalls the journey and reveals some of the original ideas for the big event film.
In the film, we saw Deadpool team up with Wolverine in an unconventional friendship film that brought a smile to the faces of fans everywhere.
But before Hugh Jackman had signed on to return, Reynolds was trying to figure out how to proceed on his own, and said he had originally envisioned an ending to the film that also featured an epic fight scene set to the tune of Madonna “Like a Prayer”, but it would have killed off a character much loved by fans.
In a recent interview with ColliderReynolds explained that he had initially planned to kill Colossus, the metal mutant hero Wade Wilson had befriended in the first two films.
The X-Man has often tried in vain to convince Wilson to be less offensive, and it seems his words have finally come through.
Reynolds said: “Deadpool doesn’t swear, anyway. He’s very, very chaste, and then when Colossus dies in the third act for the same sequence as MoCo with ‘Like a Prayer,’ he says, because in PersonagesI mean, as I’m dying on the ground, I do this long, elaborate death in Personages where I keep finding new reasons not to die.
“And it’s exhausting all my friends around me who are kind of saying goodbye. I get on a call where Colossus says, he says, ‘Wade, say f— to me,’ as he’s lying on the ground, dying, the same thing I said to him, you know, and I’m like, ‘What, what?’ and, you know, I’m emotional.
“And he says, ‘Come on, we’ll do it, we’ll do it together, you know, on the count of three, come on, here we go. It’s going to be okay. One, two…’ and I’m like, [silence] and dies, before I can even say it.”
It appears this story was left aside when Wolverine was added to the film, as Colossus only appears briefly at the beginning and end of the film.
“So Jackman agreeing to reprise the role probably saved Colossus from being killed by… zombies? Or whoever the big bad was, according to Reynolds.
He continued: “And you see Wade walk out of frame. And you’d be stuck in that empty frame for about two minutes of his Colossus body, just heartbreaking.
“Like, something that the studio would say, ‘You can’t do that!’ And Wade goes, comes back into the frame in full Deadpool costume and swords, pulls them out, kicks the door open, starts ‘Like a Prayer,’ and that MoCo versus, I don’t know, zombies scene, I don’t remember what kind of villain that was.
“And it was… I loved it, and it was such a powerful sequence. But that build is still there, but now it’s with Wolverine. And obviously, you know, it starts and ends very differently.”
Sounds crazy! I’m glad the movie ended the way it did, especially with Wolverine and the other great characters involved. I can’t wait to see Colossus in a future MCU story someday.
