Acclaimed director david lynch announced that he will no longer personally direct his projects following his diagnosis of emphysema.
The writer and director took to social media to reveal his diagnosis, without saying that his years of smoking were the cause of his illness. He also added that while he can’t direct himself, he will never retire.
Speaking to Sight & Sound magazine, Lynch explained: “I’m housebound, whether I like it or not. I can’t go out. And I can only walk a short distance before I run out of oxygen.”
After the interview was published, several of his colleagues and fans showed their support for him, and they did the same when he himself released his statement.
He said: “Yes, I have emphysema due to my many years of smoking. I must say that I loved smoking, and I love tobacco: the smell of it, lighting cigarettes, smoking them, but there is a price to pay for this pleasure, and the price for me is emphysema.
“I quit smoking over two years ago. I recently had a lot of tests done and the good news is that I am in great shape, apart from the emphysema. I am full of happiness and will never retire. I want you all to know that I really appreciate your concern.”
Lynch has such a unique and wild cinematic style that has given us projects like Twin Peaks, Dune, Inland Empire, Mulholland Drive, Ereaserhead, The Elephant Man and many others.
It sucks to hear about his diagnosis, but it’s nice to know that he’ll never stop telling his crazy stories.
