Mr. Robot Creator Sam Esmail has developed a Battlestar Galactica reboot on Peacock a few years ago, but that project is no longer in development at the streamer.
The project never received an official green light, but it’s something I was actually really looking forward to. I’d love to see what Esmail has planned for this with the franchise. I think he’s going to deliver something really awesome!
The reboot has been a passion project for Sam Esmail, and while Peacock will no longer pursue it, it will be shopped around to other networks and streaming services, so there’s still a chance it will happen.
Michael Lesslie was hired to write the reboot in 2020, but then left the project in 2021. More recently, Derek Simonds has been tapped to serve as writer, executive producer and showrunner.
by Ronald D. MooreThe creator of the 2000 series was previously asked about the new reboot and whether he feels like he’s an integral part of the intellectual property.
He said, “It’s just like, good riddance, you know? Like you said, I’ve rebooted and reinvented or whatever term we want to use so far. Far be it from me to blame anyone else for doing the same thing.
“And Sam Esmail called me personally and was like, ‘Hey, you know, I want to do this. Are you okay with that?’ And I was like, ‘You don’t really need my permission, but I appreciate it!’ It was a great call, and I wish him the best of luck.”
Moore previously explained that he and Esmail had discussed the upcoming show and discovered that, during their conversations, rather than starting from scratch, Esmail intended to keep his show in the same universe as Moore’s.
He said: “Sam called me and was very kind, he didn’t pitch me the story, so I don’t know. But he said his plans and that he wasn’t going to reboot the show and change the cast, but he wanted to do something in the same universe.
“Sam is incredible and I love Mr. Robot. I was like, you know, ‘You’re an incredible guy and an incredible writer, go with God!'”
Earlier, when giving an update on the project, Esmail said, “I just read a great schematic and it’s in great shape. Since the strike is over, at least the WGA strike is over, we’re back to developing it.”
I hope the project finds a new home, I want to see it!
