Minnie Driver on Playing Penguin in BATMAN: CAPED CRUSADER – “She’s Really Evil”

Minnie Driver on Playing Penguin in BATMAN: CAPED CRUSADER – “She’s Really Evil”

Last week it was announced that Minnie the driver would have taken on the role of a gender-swapped version of the Penguin in Bruce Tim’S Batman: Caped Crusader

This was a very interesting and unexpected piece of casting, and despite the backlash from fans, I like Driver and am excited to see what he can do with this character as he brings it to life.

During an interview with Variety, Driver was asked to address fears of possible backlash from hypercritical fans, and she responded:

“The thing is, if it hadn’t been so beautifully imagined or reimagined, if it had somehow just been forced to tick a box of, ‘Oh, now we have to have fluidity around the characters,’ it wouldn’t be like that.

“The essence of the Penguin is the essence of the Penguin. She’s truly evil. She does some really terrible things and I hope she’s embraced as the villain she’s always been.”

He concluded by saying: “The essence of this show is quintessential Batman. Make no mistake, the fact that the Penguin is a truly terrifying woman speaks volumes about Bruce’s imagination. [Timm] and the whole team.”

We can only wait and see how this character will be brought to life.

The series description reads: “Welcome to Gotham City, where the corrupt outnumber the good, criminals are rampant, and law-abiding citizens live in a constant state of fear.

“Forged in the fires of tragedy, wealthy socialite Bruce Wayne becomes something more and less than human: BATMAN. His single-handed crusade for justice attracts unexpected allies within the GCPD and City Hall, but his heroic actions have deadly and unforeseen ramifications.”

This series will be a completely new take on the Batman mythology, and the series is set in the very early years of Batman’s crime-fighting career. Timm said, “Batman is so early in his career that in the first episode he’s still an urban legend.”

He continued saying: “It is not Year One,” referring to the Frank Miller AND David Mazzucchelli Batman source comic. “It’s more like ‘Second Week.'”

Not only will Bruce Wayne be trying to figure out how to become Batman, but this will be a different Batman than the versions we’ve seen before.

Timm explained, “I wanted to make it a little weird and creepy. If you’re stuck in a room with Batman, whether you’re Commissioner Gordon or Barbara Gordon or Renee Montoya, you don’t feel comfortable. You’re like, ‘What is this guy? What is he about?'”

The rest of the cast includes Hamish Linklater (Midnight snack) like Batman, Christina Ricci like Selina Kyle / Catwoman, My Friend Jamie Chung is Dr. Harleen Quinzel/Harley Quinn, and former voice actress of Batman Diedrich Bader will play Harvey Dent / Two-Face.

Other cast members include Eric Morgan Stuart, Michelle C. Bonilla, Krystal Joy Brown, John DiMaggio, Grace McKenna, Written by Jason Watkins, Paul Scheer, Answers, by Gary Anthony Williams, Dan Donohue, David Krumholtz, Haley Joel OsmentAND Toby Stephen.

This animated series has been in development for some time with Timm, The World of JJ Abrams, Mattia Reevesand comic book writer And Brubaker leading the charge.

Batman: Caped Crusader will debut on Prime Video on August 1st.
