It was pretty tough for the fans when David Duchovny he ended up moving away from The X-Files halfway through season eight. I remember wondering why he was leaving the show, and then not long after that I saw him in that sci-fi movie Evolution.
I remember thinking, why would Duchovny leave such a great show to star in such a mediocre movie? But the actor shared why he ended up leaving the show for a while.
Speaking to The Times, she said: “It was just my desire to have a family, but also to try other things. It had kind of taken over my life.”
He went on to explain that there were no hard feelings about it: “There was no animosity with the actual show and the people I worked with. I’m proud of the show: it was culturally central in a way that’s very hard to do these days in a fragmented landscape.
“There are so many lightning-fast aspects to it that I can’t help but think it’s some kind of miracle.”
At the time it was so upsetting and weird to watch the show when Duchovy left. In fact, I even stopped watching the show afterward because it just didn’t feel the same.
I eventually finished the series, but it wasn’t until I rewatched it years later that I appreciated the episodes without Duchovny’s involvement more. The creative team did a fantastic job with that series until the end.
