The boys star Anthony Starr He recently spoke about the series’ fourth season, his character Homelander’s comparisons to Trump, and the finale’s big post-credits scene.
The series’ season finale was originally titled “Assassination Run” before the attempted assassination of Donald Trump. It ended with Homelander one step closer to the Oval Office… and depicted as more deranged and ruthless than ever.
During an interview with Collider, Starr was asked if he still enjoys playing Homelander and being frequently compared to Trump.
While he doesn’t mention Trump by name, it’s obvious who he’s talking about. He said, “One of the great things that I loved, and love about this show, and will continue to love as we move forward, is the layers that we’ve been able to put into this character.
“We were always conscious of making him three-dimensional, and not making him with a curly mustache. I know Eric references a certain political figure of our time as a base note for the character, and I think that’s right, but ironically, I think we have more dimension in this character than we do in the human one.
“I’ve always looked at that because there are elements of a lot of different people in there and we were able to really dig deep. This season we were able to really go deep.
“We had some really deep, dark Homelander storylines, and I was excited for people to see them. I’m proud of what we did, and I’m proud of the character.”
As for the post-credits scene of the season 4 finale, it saw Jensen Ackles reprise his role as Soldier Boy, setting up the character’s return in the fifth and final season. It had already been revealed that Soldier Boy is Homelander’s father.
Antony said: “First of all, on a very personal and selfish note, I hope and pray that I get more scenes with Jensen. [Ackles] because we haven’t really done it. I feel like there’s still a lot to do. And, selfishly, I really like Jensen.
“He fit in like peas and carrots, and Forrest and Jenny, when he came on board. He’s a great guy to work with. We had a lot of fun. And I think that relationship, in terms of how at the core of the character is loneliness and the desire for connection, to have a real dad, a real father, we didn’t explore that.
“There’s more gold in that vein to be mined, so I’m excited. I don’t want to get my hopes up too much because I never know. I have no idea what Eric’s going to do, and I’m wrong every time. I just want to put those hopes out there, and maybe he’ll see that and grant me my wish.”
What do you think of what Starr said here? If you finished watching Season 4, what did you think of how it ended?
