The role eventually went to House of the Dragon star Milly Alcock, but some fans thought Donnelly would have been a great choice if cast by James Gunn.

Speaking about her experience auditioning for the role, Donnelly said: “It was something I really had to fight to get an audition for because I wanted to be a part of [it] and be Supergirl in every way.

“It was a dream of mine, to be a superhero on screen as well. So, I fought so hard for the audition and for the fact that I got one and that they liked it and then I was able to go and audition on screen.”

She went on to talk about how close she came to landing the role, saying, “I was able to do stunts and do scenes on camera as Supergirl. That was really all I could ask for; that I was able to do that.

“I still don’t feel like it was real, so it was just an honor. I think they’re just going in a different direction and that’s totally awesome, but everyone there was so kind and amazing. It was surreal how kind they were. [Laughs].”

He added: “It was nice to get so close and hopefully be in the DCU in some way, that would be really cool. It was a great experience.”

When asked what other DC roles Donnelly would be interested in, she was open to anything.

The actress said: “I think, yeah, it’s a wait and see who ends up joining the DC Universe and the cinematic universe. I’ll definitely keep an eye on it because just to be a part of James Gunn’s team in any way has been really cool and made me feel really good.”

“I hope there’s room for that, so honestly, it would be really cool to play any superhero on screen. There are so many to choose from!”

It was previously reported that the film would go into production after Gunn wrapped filming Superman. AS, Supergirl will be the next DC film to go into production.

Ana Nogueira is writing the screenplay for Supergirl: The Woman of the FutureAND Craig Gillespie (Cruella AND I, Tonya) is set to direct Woman of Tomorrow.

It has been explained that the film is “based on King TomThe wonderful comic series that came out just last year… This is a very different kind of Super Girl.”

In this film, “we see the difference between Superman who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was a baby, and the super girl who was raised on a sliver of rock on Krypton and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life, and then came to Earth as a young girl and is much more hardcore. That’s not exactly the Supergirl we’re used to seeing.”

In that King comic book story: “Kara Zor-El has seen some epic adventures over the years, but now she finds her life has no meaning or purpose. Here she is, a young woman who saw her planet destroyed and was sent to Earth to protect a newborn cousin who ultimately no longer needed her. What was it all for?”

Everywhere she goes, “people see her only through the lens of Superman’s fame. Just when Supergirl thinks she’s had enough, everything changes. An alien girl seeks her out on a cruel mission. Her world has been destroyed and the bad guys responsible are still out there.”

She wants revenge, “and if Supergirl won’t help her, she will do it herself, no matter the cost. Now a Kryptonian, a dog and an angry, heartbroken child set off into space on a journey that will shake them to the core.”

The film will hit theaters on June 26, 2026.
