Here’s a trailer for a wild looking indie horror film titled The Wheel of HeavenIn the film, “a woman involved in predatory relationships is catapulted into a world of multi-layered choices after discovering a mystical book in a thrift store.”
This trailer gives a little taste of the craziness this film has to offer. We also have an interview with the film’s writer and director, Joe Badon.
This trailer is shared in partnership with the FilmQuest Film Festival, where we seek to showcase some of the new independent shorts and genre films that filmmakers are creating.
Watch the trailer and then check out the interview!
What was the inspiration for your film? How did you get the idea?
I love anthology films (like Creepshow or Kentucky Fried Movie), but I wanted to make an anthology where all the stories collapsed on top of each other. Kind of like a Russian doll.
Tell us about yourself. What is your background? How long have you been a director?
I have been a full-time illustrator for 13 years and have been making films since 2017. I have made 3 feature films: THE GOD INSIDE MY EAR, SISTER TEMPEST and now THE WHEEL OF HEAVEN.
What drives you to work in genre cinema and tell these kinds of stories?
I love avant-garde and experimental cinema, and genre cinema goes hand in hand with experimental cinema (at least in my opinion).
What was the part of the process of making this project that you enjoyed the most?
Pre-production. I love all the concept art and preparation. There is a lot to dream about during pre-production.
What are you most proud of about this film?
The editing. My editor did a colossal job putting this thing together and it’s glorious.
What is your favorite anecdote or moment from the making of the film?
One day we had a wardrobe malfunction. My lead actress, Kali Russell, couldn’t wear her space captain costume because it was showing through her shirt. So in a moment of ingenuity, my producer (Katie Weiss Porter) took some paper plates and used them as a bra for Kali. And on screen it’s fantastic and very comical.
What was the most challenging moment or experience you had while making your film?
We had a big day of shooting where we had to move the shooting date and reschedule 30 people. It was a nightmare.
If so, how did your film change or diverge from its original concept during pre-production, production, and/or post-production? How did this change the way you approach future projects as a result?
There was a lot of improvisation in the editing room. We basically shot A LOT of BTS footage and put it into the film in post-production. This created a lot of creative chaos in the editing room. It just makes me want to improvise more in future projects.
Who were some of your collaborators and actors in the film? How did you start working together?
Actress Kali Russell: I worked with her previously on Sister Tempest. Cinematographer Daniel Waghorne, Editor Joseph Estrade, Composer Jason Kruppa: We’ve worked together on every project. I believe in building a team of actors and crew to work together on multiple projects. It creates a workflow together that can only happen on multiple projects.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received as a director, and what would you say to new directors?
You make commercials to make money. You make movies to make art.
What are your career plans and what do you hope this film will do for your career? What kind of stories do you want to tell moving forward?
I hope this film will bring attention to my work. I want to break free from the normal narrative structure and create new and different ways to tell a story.
What is your next project and when can we expect to see it?
I have a LOT under my hat. But if I don’t find an investor, I won’t do shit. So, are there investors out there? I’m here! With a LOT of stories!
Where can we find more of your work and where can interested parties contact you? Do you have a website or YouTube/Vimeo channel? Do you have any social media profiles?
