David Duchovny Talks About Auditioning for All Three Male Lead Roles in FULL HOUSE

David Duchovny will forever be linked to his breakout role in the fan-favorite sci-fi series The X-Filesbut the show was far from his first audition. Duchovny explained in the latest episode of his podcast Fail better:

“I auditioned for all three parts on Sold out. At first, they had me for, I think, the father. And then they had me for the character of Stamos. And then they had me for the other guy.

I thought, ‘I’ve got to get one, and it’s going to change my life.’ I had a bunch of these pilots that I jumped on when I first got to L.A., and I thought every single one of them was going to be a game-changer. I just needed to be able to pay the rent, too.”

Those three roles in Sold out ended up going to Bob Saget, Dave Coulier and John Stamos. Duchovny would get his big break in The X-Files as FBI Special Agent Fox Mulder.

Duchovny went on to talk about how his loss was actually entirely fair considering the style of sitcoms at the time he auditioned. Sold out it wasn’t his strong point.

“I was really bad at that kind of stuff. I didn’t know how to do that sitcom stuff. I don’t know what they were thinking, that they thought I would exist in that world.

I mean, I guess I could have learned, but I wasn’t ready for the kind of high-energy performance that they require.”

Duchovny would later star in the drama series Californication in 2007 and most recently in the 2023 romantic comedy What happens next?opposite to Meg Ryan.
