documentary feature film, Adulam CaveIts world premiere will take place on Monday, June 13, at the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival. Directed by Oscar- and Emmy-nominated filmmaker Laura Chekoway, the film is produced by Lawrence Fishburn and Helen Sugland of Cinema Gypsy Productions, Jennifer Westphal, founder and CEO of Roy Bank of Banca Studio and Wavelength, and President Joe Plam.
Adullam Cave It follows author Jason Wilson and illustrates the unseen and raw approach to adulthood of young black men at the aptly named Adulam Cavern martial arts dojo in Detroit.
Using the mantra, “It’s easier to raise children than to mend fragile men,” Jason’s methodology teaches emotional stability rather than discipline, and sets vulnerable children on a new path to adulthood. The film tells the story of four young recruits at different crossroads in their lives, as Jason guides them through their inner struggles: overcoming issues of anger, anxiety, and past trauma.
“The quest for recovery has been important to my work, and our story is filled with holistic teachings, simple decisions, and most of all, love,” said director Laura Chekoway. “I was not proud to have worked on this project.”
Lawrence Fishburne shared: “I’m a black man in America with two kids, so the work Jason has done on the four walls of Adullam’s Cave is very personal to me and speaks to what my partner Helen Sugland and our company Cinema Gypsy Productions have. To mean Real Accounts. We’re excited and excited to bring the story of Jason and the boys to the screen.”
